These are the courses I'm teaching at the Port Townsend School of Woodworking in 2021.


Traditional Finishing

May 29, 2021 – May 30, 2021   or  Jul 31, 2021 – Aug 1, 2021

Finishing protects and enhances a piece of furniture. Many contemporary finishes emphasize the convenience of application but, at least to me, do not bring out the beauty of the grain as completely as skillfully-applied, traditional finishes.

Sharpening

Jun 26, 2021 – Jun 27, 2021 or  Nov 13, 2021 – Nov 14, 2021

Sharpening is one of the fundamental skills required by any woodworker (or perhaps any one). In this weekend class, we’ll be focusing on how to sharpen chisels and plane blades and introduce you to techniques to sharpen a wide variety of hand tools.

Introduction to Bowl Turning

Oct 23, 2021 – Oct 24, 2021

This class is designed to give you an understanding of the tools used by bowl turners and the skills to safely and effectively use them. You will start to develop a feel for turning. The class starts with a review of the fundamental rules for turning safely and progresses to turning bowls from green (fresh cut) wood.

Woodturning for Beginners

Nov 29, 2021 – Dec 3, 2021

This five day class is designed to give you an understanding of the tools used by turners and the skills to safely and effectively use them; you’ll start to develop a feel for turning. The class begins with the fundamental rules for turning spindles safely and confidently, then expands on your new skills by turning bowls from green (freshly cut) wood.
